What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is a dental specialty that involves straightening teeth and correcting bites (malocclusions) to improve appearance and function. This can be achieved through braces, retainers and, if necessary, jaw surgery. Besides improved oral health, patients often experience improvements in their facial balance and speech. Early Orthodontic Treatment
At Neibaur Family Orthodontics in Murray, Utah, Dr. Ben Neibaur encourages you to bring in your children for an early orthodontic exam when they are 7 years old, as recommended by the American Association of Orthodontists. Why so soon? Because bite problems caused by an upper or lower jaw that is growing too much or not enough, or that is too wide or too narrow, may already be present at this age.
Jaw and bite problems can be difficult to correct at a later age or even cause irreparable damage to the permanent teeth. Bite problems can hinder proper cleaning and cause functional problems as your child grows older, including gum disease, cavities and speech disorders.
The Benefits of Correcting Bite Problems Early
Early detection and treatment of jaw and bite problems can prevent your child from needing costly and time-consuming dental care in the future. Early intervention can also reduce treatment time for your child’s braces later on and provide a stable, healthy bite for a lifetime.
With early orthodontic treatment, Dr. Neibaur uses interceptive methods such as expansion devices or growth modification appliances (fixed or removable) to direct the growth of the upper and lower jaws toward an ideal alignment and provide adequate room for eruption of all permanent teeth.
Dr. Neibaur will conduct a comprehensive exam to check for these and other problems:
- Bite problems such as overbite, underbite, open bite or deep bite
- Severe crowding of teeth
- Crossbite of front and back teeth
- Excessive wear and chipping of front teeth
- Bad habits such as finger/thumb-sucking or tongue-thrusting
- Eruption problems and space management
For more information about early orthodontic treatment or to schedule your child’s appointment, call (801) 269-0303 in Murray or (801)766-4944 in Saratoga Springs or request an appointment online.

Adolescent and Adult Orthodontic Treatment
Do you or your children have crooked teeth? At Neibaur Family Orthodontics, Dr. Neibaur offers several orthodontic options for children, teens and adults, and he will recommend the best option for your individual condition. Our selection of braces and orthodontic solutions includes:
- State-of-the art traditional silver braces. These braces are time-tested and proven reliable for proper fit, function and comfort.
- Progressive clear ceramic braces. These braces are perfect for the esthetically conscious patient and are nearly invisible.
- Invisalign®. These removable aligners are clear and nearly undetectable. Each aligner is custom made just for you to gradually shift your teeth into place. Invisalign is recommended primarily for adults.
Braces can straighten crooked teeth, correct the spacing between teeth and improve bite patterns, all of which contribute to healthy teeth and gums, prevent future dental problems and enhance your smile and self-confidence.
After your braces are removed, you will need to wear a retainer to ensure your teeth maintain their new alignment. You may need to wear one on the top teeth, bottom teeth or both. Dr. Neibaur will instruct you in the use and care of your retainer.
To protect your child’s teeth and braces during contact or impact sports, Dr. Neibaur can also make a customized mouth guard that is professionally fitted to your child’s mouth and teeth. Custom-made mouth guards offer the best protection and most comfortable wear.
Dr. Neibaur and our friendly, experienced orthodontic team will provide you or your child with the above-and-beyond personal attention that can make visits to our office a relaxed, fun and positive experience. Call (801) 269-0303 in Murray or (801)766-4944 in Saratoga Springs or request an appointment online.

Surgical Orthodontics (Corrective Jaw Surgery)
Surgical orthodontics, or orthognathic surgery, is performed to correct the misalignment of jaws and teeth and correct functional problems caused by the misalignment, such as
- Difficulty chewing or biting food
- Difficulty swallowing
- Chronic jaw or jaw joint (TMJ) pain and headache
- Excessive wear of the teeth
- Open bite (space between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed)
- Chronic mouth breathing and dry mouth
- Sleep apnea (breathing problems when sleeping, including snoring)
Corrective jaw surgery can also improve unbalanced facial appearances resulting from a receding chin or protruding jaw. The results of corrective jaw surgery can have a dramatic and positive effect on many aspects of your life.
Because surgical orthodontics also moves the teeth, you will need to wear braces both before and after jaw alignment. Wearing them prior to surgery ensures teeth are in their proper positions after surgery.
How do you know if you need corrective jaw surgery? You might be a candidate if
- You have an improper bite resulting from misaligned teeth and/or jaws.
- Your upper and lower jaws grew at different rates.
- You have an injury or birth defect that affected your jaw alignment.
Dr. Neibaur performs surgical orthodontic treatment only if it is absolutely necessary, and only after jaw growth is complete – usually by age 16 for girls and age 18 for boys.
To learn more about corrective jaw surgery or to schedule a consultation with Dr. Neibaur, call (801) 269-0303 in Murray or (801)766-4944 in Saratoga Springs or request an appointment online.
