SLEEP APNEA
Obstructive sleep apnea is typically caused by an obstruction in the nose or throat that blocks a person’s breathing airway. During episodes of sleep apnea, you may stop breathing for up to one minute while sleeping, which decreases oxygen levels in the bloodstream and strains the heart. This potentially life-threatening disorder is linked to irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure and heart failure. Symptoms of this condition include loud snoring, pauses in breathing and daytime sleepiness.
Sleep apnea is often treated with a breathing assist device (CPAP machine) at night. However, many people do not like the CPAP machine and find alternative treatments, such as a custom-made oral appliance, to be much more comfortable for sleeping.
Oral appliances v. CPAP machine
If sleep apnea and loud snoring are preventing you or your partner from getting a good night’s sleep, Dr. Ben Neibaur can make a customized oral appliance for you to wear when sleeping. By repositioning or stabilizing the lower jaw and tongue, oral appliances keep the soft tissue in the back of the throat from obstructing your airway and interrupting normal breathing patterns. Dr. Neibaur will fit your oral appliance for comfort by using a mold of your mouth to design your unique fit. Hear what some of our satisfied patients have to say:
