Do Parents and Children Have the Same Expectations of Braces?

From a parent’s standpoint, braces are a beautiful investment in their child’s future smile. Children may view braces quite differently, as they are the ones actually wearing them on a day-to-day basis. Researchers found what they expected; parents’ and children’s opinions of braces differ.

Researchers in London surveyed parents and children ages 12-14 years old to find out their expectations about wearing braces. The researchers found that the parents' expectations about the length of treatment and the process of having braces fitted were more realistic. Parents and children differed in opinions about food and drink restrictions. It appears that kids will be kids, and parents need to educate and remind children about avoiding candy, food, and drinks that can damage braces or harm their teeth.
